How to Use Instagram for Ministry

Instagram reaches over 2 billion people every month. Your congregation is on it. Your community is on it. The people God is calling you to reach are scrolling through it right now.

The 4 Types of Instagram Content That Work for Ministry

1. Reels (Short Video) — The single most powerful tool for reach on Instagram right now. 15–90 seconds of vertical video. Share a testimony, a scripture reflection, a behind-the-scenes moment of ministry, or a quick teaching point. Done consistently, Reels can grow your ministry reach faster than anything else.

2. Carousels (Multiple Images or Slides) — Perfect for teaching content. “5 verses for anxious days.” “3 things the prodigal son teaches us about grace.” Carousels get saved and shared — which signals to Instagram that your content is valuable.

3. Stories (24-Hour Content) — Use Stories for the real, unpolished, behind-the-scenes side of ministry. Prayer requests. Pre-service preparation. Post-service reflections. Stories build relationship and intimacy in a way that feed posts can’t.

4. Static Posts (Images and Graphics) — Still valuable for announcing events, sharing quotes and maintaining a visually cohesive profile.

What to Post (and When)

Post Reels 2–3 times per week. Post Stories daily if possible. Post carousels or static images 1–2 times per week. Tuesday–Thursday mornings and evenings typically perform well for Christian content.

The Golden Rule of Ministry on Instagram

Every piece of content should have a purpose. Ask: what do I want this person to feel, know or do after seeing this? Give them a clear next step.
